Beep, the outlet I do most of my freelancing with, has a debated issue every week.
This week--Is it wrong to tell a kid there’s no Santa?
I took the side of "No."

Will Smith - "The Pursuit of Happyness" - interview
Will Smith finds 'Happyness' in family, fortune and, yes, even fame
"Independence Day," "Men in Black." “Enemy of the State." .… Will Smith. He is big-budget blockbuster. Even his first Oscar nomination was portraying a man larger than life — Muhammad Ali. Now he has found a different path, and he brought his son (Jaden Smith) along for the ride. Don’t worry, he’ll be back doing blockbusters such as “I Am Legend.”
But now it’s time for "The Pursuit of Happyness" — which opens Dec.15 — the real-life story of Chris Gardener, a father who struggles in poverty while taking care of his son and his attempts to rise above. And yes, if you’re curious, Smith is really that good at the Rubik’s Cube.

Paul Feig reveals the lowdown on what he’s been up to since ‘Geeks’
He’s got on a suit, a vest, a tie and nicely framed glasses. Some things in the universe just make sense. Paul Feig looks exactly like the type of guy you would hope create a show as great as “Freaks and Geeks.” It all fits, cool geek.

December Movie/Holiday Preview - feature
December films blow in like the Windy City
There are few big cities that can match the magic of Chicago. That statement can be made 11 months out of the year, but during December, it’s another story. Nobody does it quite like the windy city.
The same can be said for movies in December. With blockbusters and Academy Award hopefuls meeting within the same 31 days, it’s tough to decide where your time should be spent. Want to sit around and pack on the pounds? Go see “Rocky Balboa.” Excited about “Eragon?” Then, head over to Macy’s storefront. Can’t wait to see “Dreamgirls” with Chicago native Jennifer Hudson? The Daley Center is for you. Don’t understand what I am talking about? You will, just continue reading the only monthly movie preview with a local holiday twist…

Darren Aronofsky - "The Fountain" director - interview
‘Fountain’ of truth: Director Darren Aronofsky reveals secrets behind his new movie
Darren Aronofsky is not your normal Hollywood director, if there is such a thing. In 1998 he came out with “Pi,” a low-budget film about the over-analyzing of numbers. In 2000 Aronofsky directed Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans and Ellen Burstyn in the dark, disturbing “Requiem for a Dream.” It remains one of the best cinematic showcases of destruction drug addictions.

Joey Lauren Adams - Come Early Morning - interview
"Chasing Amy's" Joey Lauren Adams expands her resume to directing
With all the voices in Hollywood, it's hard to stand out. But when you hear the squeaky, typically quiet voice of Joey Lauren Adams, you immediately know who you are talking to. The actress from "Chasing Amy" and "Dazed & Confused" has decided to put a pause on acting and focus her attention behind the camera. Adams has written and directed "Come Early Morning" (due November 10).

Matthew McCrory - West Dundee native - interview
New DreamWorks' flick has suburban ties
West Dundee native Matthew McCrory technical director of 'Flushed Away'
When you go to the new animated film "Flushed Away," which opened last week, it’s going to be hard to pick out Matthew McCrory’s work.
The West Dundee native is not a voice; that would be the work of Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Bill Nighy and Ian McKellen. Nor is McCrory one of the film’s animators. His title reads “technical director.” Don’t worry, the question of what a tech director does was my first to him.

November Film Preview - Movies/Chicago Bulls - feature
November's films: Big Ben meets the big screen
We're in Heaven with the Chicago Bears. We're in hell (a very cold one) with the temperature taking a dip downward. And yet we don't know what to make of the Chicago Bulls. With the addition of Ben Wallace, P.J. Brown and Tyrus Thomas, are they one of the premier playoff teams? Or are they going to get off to another slow start and continue to be a .500 ball club?
Well, it's time for me to put it all in perspective for you. And luckily it will all make sense once we add in the November films that are coming to a theater near you. It's the monthly movie preview ... with a local twist.

The shaggy red hair will get this 18-year-old recognized for years to come, thanks to his wizard friend Harry Potter, who does battle against a guy we shouldn’t name. But Rupert Grint is shaking the role of Ron Weasley (just temporarily, I promise) to star in his first leading role.

Aaron Karo's ‘Ruminations’ on his success (and getting lucky)
‘Recovering Frat Boy’ tour coming to House of Blues Oct. 27
Without the Internet, Aaron Karo thinks he would be in a ditch somewhere.
Normally that’s not the response you would expect from a frat guy who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and worked on Wall Street. But thanks to an e-mail he sent to 20 friends as a freshman, Karo is getting drunk, hooking up and making a career out of it. The work-hard, play-hard 27-year-old is a voice of his generation, whatever they are calling themselves these days.

Local filmmaker finds more than a means to an end in his 3,100-mile journey
Lee Kazimir walked. One foot in front of the next. From Madrid to Kiev.
There are moments when you take stock of your life and don’t like the direction in which you see yourself heading. That was the dilemma facing Kazimir at age 24. Many would consider graduate school, a career change or moving to a different city. Not Kazimir — he walked — and, hopefully, audiences will want to join him on that walk through his documentary.

Larry Clark from "Wassup Rockers" - Interview
New 'Kids' are 'Wassup Rockers'
Director/screenwriter Larry Clark, who broke into the movie business with his controversial 1995 film “Kids,” is back with another film about the youth of America.
“Wassup Rockers” is set in South Central and Beverly Hills, focusing on a group of Latino kids who wear tight pants, skateboard, listen to punk rock and who inevitably don’t fit into the hip hop culture that surrounds them. The story is based on real life experiences, and none of the kids in the film has acting experience.
Before Clark started making movies, he was a photographer, capturing teen subculture with his photo books Tulsa and Teenage Lust. He never strayed far from controversy, teenagers or trying to make authentic films.
Clark sat down with Beep early one morning at the Peninsula Hotel to talk about the film, his past and getting his actors in trouble with the law.

Top 7 animated films - feature
"Over the Hedge" begins the animated fight for box-office supremacy this weekend. It stars Bruce Willis as a raccoon trying to help his friends recapture their land. More importantly, it is from the creators of "Shrek." In fact, the other two animated flicks this summer can be introduced the same way. "Cars" (due June 9) is from Disney/Pixar and "Monster House" (due July 21) is from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, and the graphics look like "Polar Express."
All of these movies have the pedigree to enter the best of the best. And sure, Pixar's films could make up the whole list. There won't be any hybrids either, which means no "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" or "Space Jam." So, with that in mind, here are my Top 7 animated films of all-time.

Before graduate school, I found I wasn't proud of any accomplishment on my resume (sales jobs, computer experience), yet this represented my life to the world. These are more or less things that have stayed in my head, entertained me and somehow shaped who I have become.

Guys Restroom Etiquette - Op/Ed
Guys Restroom Etiquette - Op/Ed
I was going to sugarcoat some sort of intro, but really what's the point. Ladies, I have no idea if this will interest you at all, perhaps in a "behind the looking glass" sort of way.
Men, we need rules. I am talking about the restroom.

Jason Reitman - Interview
I sat down with the writer/directorJason Reitman to talk about this new film Thank You For Smoking. He was in good spirits and he should have been, the film is getting great reviews and for a first time director to pull off this fantastic ensemble piece is quite an accomplishment.

MLB 2006 Preview - Sports Feature
The first pitch will be released at 8:05 p.m. EST on Sunday when the Cleveland Indians visit the defending World Series Champion Chicago White Sox (haven't said that since 1917) on ESPN. With that, the 2006 Major League Baseball season will be underway.
Big payrolls and small market teams are all tied for first when the season begins, but a few teams stand out as strong candidates to knock off the White Sox on the top of the hill.

South Park - The Complete 7th Season - DVD Review
South Park - The Complete 7th Season - DVD Review
There's an '80s sitcom you might remember that opened every week with the line, "You take the good, you take the bad, and there you have..." This could almost double as a description of South Park: The Complete Seventh Season.
Kyle, Stan, Kenny and Cartman are back in a little town in Colorado and there are moments that feel as fresh as when Trey Parker and Matt Stone first drew the two-dimensional figures. But there are also episodes that show the age of one fart joke too many, but when you're dealing with an entire season, that just comes with the territory.
When things are clicking, South Park still has enough juice in the tank to make it one of the best laugh-out-loud comedies on TV.

Ballad of Broken Seas - CD Review
Sounds like: Tom Waits meets Neko Case.
Neither name is household, but you might know who Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan have worked for in the past.
Campbell is a former singer with Belle & Sebastian and Lanegan has been with the Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age.
On paper, they are not a good mix, on the new album Ballad of the Broken Seas, they are a haunting combination.

The j Awards -- Results
The j Awards -- Results
Don't worry cowboy, you can cry on my shoulder. The results of The j Awards are in and it was a banner year. Now, if you are the type that just needs the numbers feel free to scroll down and get your fix.
The j Awards were just like the Academy Awards in the fact that they both had a wide variety of winners. The big difference was movie of the year and the host. While the Oscars were lucky enough to get Jon Stewart (and should have him hosting for years ala Johnny Carson), The j Awards were once again stuck with a tall blond movie geek shouting out award winners during the commercials.

Gavin Hood (Oscar Winner) - Interview
I sat down with writer/director Gavin Hood of the Oscar nominated foreign film Tsotsi. Hood had the energy of a kid on a sugar-high even though he had been talking to the press for five hours by the time I showed up.
We talked about the film, the characters, the Oscar buzz and even MacGyver. Hood is quite the talker, and we even got sidetracked with some South African political history (which I didn't include below). Tsotsi opens in Chicago on March 10.

A season of baseball "Virtually" done - Op/Ed
A season of baseball "Virtually" done - Op/Ed
Every single year it seems the baseball season begins earlier than the year before. But here I am again on the morning of Friday, Feb. 24, 2006 at 9:30 a.m. in front of my computer "working" while every 30 seconds I have a chance for the golden prize known as Chicago Cubs tickets.
Last year, the "Virtual Waiting Room" was my best friend. I had planned on getting two or three games and four tickets to each. But as soon as I was able to score Red Sox tickets I had a conversation with myself.
Me: Wow, this is exciting, Red Sox tickets, my second favorite team.
Myself: You know, I bet we could get a lot of money selling these tickets.
Me: How can you say that?
Myself: It's only 10:14 a.m. we'll have plenty more chances at tickets. In fact, we could make tons of money off this. You could pay off all your credit cards.
Me: So, what you're saying is you have to spend money to make money.
Myself: That's what Alex P. Keaton taught me in an episode of Family Ties.
Me: Sold!

Conversation Starters - Op/ed
Perhaps the cookouts are finally coming to an end. But if you still have a few to go to before the winter months keep us indoors, here are some rules to live by.
When it comes to cookouts (it is not a BB-Q unless you are actually barbecuing), one thought keeps running through my head -- and it has nothing to do with the amount of meat I will be eating-What am I going to talk about? Let me expand that thought.
What am I going to talk about with this guy that I have never met, but my girlfriend dragged me to this thing and now she is off talking to her friends and I am standing next to a Bob, Mike, Tim or I don't even remember his name? He is barely talking. We have nothing in common. This is going to last forever, argh!
Pants. That is another thing that reminds me of summer. I am talking about the pants my girlfriend wears in our relationship that puts me in these situations.

Morningwood, self titled - CD Review
Sounds like: Joan Jett meets The Strokes
Sometimes there is nothing worse than a screaming woman; other times there is nothing better.
Morningwood can range from rock to pop on their self-titled album, and typically are at their best when they are pounding out near pointless lyrics and dominating the guitar.

Second City Chicago - Show Review
Second City Chicago - Show Review
Iraqtile Dysfunction(on the Main Stage)Iraqtile, directed by Ron West, covers topics ranging from President Bush and South Side interrogators to Catholic priests and liberal bull. Just like most comedy, the current administration gets poked fun at more than the left.
The ensemble consists of Molly Erdman, Maribeth Monroe, Brian Gallivan, Matthew Craig, Claudia Michelle Wallace and Antoine McKay. The two standouts are Monroe and Gallivan.
Gallivan seems to be the quiet leader when on stage. He has the most range of the group going from a "queer eye"-type cast member to a lowly petitioner on the street. His best moment comes while portraying a priest at a Catholic church attempting to weed out a potentially gay candidate. His body type mirrors that of Ryan Stiles from The Drew Carey Show, but he is able to capture a reserved, almost shy persona within his lanky frame.

In one corner we had Dancing with the Stars. ABC's show was in the semi-finals with Jerry Rice, Stacy Keibler and Drew Lachey being the stars attempting to make it into the finals. Over on CBS was another installment of Survivor (now in its twelfth season). The current big boy on the block has been Fox's American Idol and it was the first elimination round of the season.

Spring Movie Preview - Feature
Spring Movie Preview - Feature
Hopefully America is putting the finishing touches on seeing 2005 films. The Oscars aren't until early March and the alternative is not too pretty.
Comparing the beauty of Capote or Brokeback Mountain to the quality of Underworld: Evolution or Pink Panther is a no-brainer. But eventually the Oscar nominated films will be out of the theaters and we'll still be months away from Superman, X-men 3 and the DaVinci Code.
So what do we do until then? Here is a list of a select few movies due out before the summer blockbusters invade.
The films are broken into categories based on Saturday Night Live commercials.
Bad Idea Jeans.
A bunch of guys shared thoughts such as "Now that I have kids, I feel much better about having a gun in the house." Not a good idea. Just like these movies aren't good ideas and shouldn't exist.
