Champagne Variety for the New Year - feature

Many variables when it comes to champagne
by Jeff Bayer

It's almost time to pop the bubbly, but perhaps you need a little more information before that holiday brunch or dinner. There are a wide variety of options, and, of course, the most important item to learn is … that might not be champagne you're drinking.

Holiday Movie Preview - feature

What are you watching this holiday?

Jeff Bayer | Contributing Writer
Wednesday, November 21, 2007

Just like the typically insane overdone holiday meal, Hollywood brings us an overflowing plate of films to choose from. The main dish is the Oscar hopefuls. Normally at this time of year, there are a couple of films that already seem to have nominations locked up, but this year’s race is wide open. Beyond the films hoping for awards, we have some family crowd pleasers such as Disney’s “Enchanted.” There are side dishes as well like “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” by the team that brought us “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.” So without further ado, let’s chow down on the 2007 Holiday Movie Preview.

The Summer Movie Preview

Blockbusters on board: Big summer on the big screen

Ahhh, summer. A time to catch up with old friends. And this summer, there are more old friends than ever to choose from when you go to the theater. Whether it’s a sequel, a series, a TV show making the big leap or a trilogy coming to an end, most of the movies we’ll be seeing in the next few months will be familiar faces.
The bottom line for film studios is simple: make money. And continuing a film franchise makes that cha-ching sound just about better than anything else (until it doesn’t, then you hear that sad waa-waa sound from the studio execs).

But we don’t care about the studios. This summer’s all about getting to hang out with those familiar faces again. In the mood to do a little gambling — and perhaps steal millions of dollars? Then you’ll want to give Danny Ocean a call. If you feel like you can’t die and want to prove it by getting into a high-speed car chase, then John McClane or Jason Bourne need to be sitting shotgun. Maybe you want to play dress up with elaborate costumes, makeup and a little make-believe? I recommend Captain Jack Sparrow or that Potter kid. Or perhaps you just want a pal who’s fat, bald and stupid. Is there anyone better than Homer Simpson? Well, maybe an ogre.

Rock Climbing - Day Trippin' - Feature

Learning the ropes of rock climbing

The weather is changing and perhaps, a little outdoor expedition is what you crave. Climbing a big rock might just be what the adventure doctor ordered. Most of us are probably not ready to jet off to Arizona for a weekend to dangle off of a cliff, but if you want to imitate Tom Cruise from “Mission: Impossible II” (the climbing skill, not the hair), there are lot of places, both indoors and outdoors, where you can flex your climbing muscles right here in the Midwest.

Hoopdancing - a new exercise - Feature

Get into the groove with hoopdancing

The hula hoop. For most it immediately conjures up memories from childhood, but 32-year-old Heather Crosby’s hoping hoops will soon have exercise on your mind.

Crosby is one local instructor now offering “hooping” or “hoopdance” classes. It’s a new way to work out that teaches coordination, boosts cardio-vascular endurance and tones your entire body from fingertips to ankles.

Lee Kazimir - feature

Lee Kazimir - feature

Madrid to Kiev. On foot. On film.

Local filmmaker finds more than a means to an end in his 3,100-mile journey

Lee Kazimir walked. One foot in front of the next. From Madrid to Kiev.

There are moments when you take stock of your life and don’t like the direction in which you see yourself heading. That was the dilemma facing Kazimir at age 24. Many would consider graduate school, a career change or moving to a different city. Not Kazimir — he walked — and, hopefully, audiences will want to join him on that walk through his documentary.

"Feast of Fools" Podcast - Feature

"Feast of Fools" Podcast - Feature

‘Fools’ gold: Local gay podcast getting national attention

The living room is filled with furniture from Crate & Barrel and IKEA. Books line the shelves; an exercise ball lies in the corner; and an unassuming TV sits on a stand. Just off to the side is a dining room table surrounded by windows on three sides. Scattered over the table are papers with handwritten notes, Apple equipment and some nice-looking microphones.

Not many people know, but this is one of the most popular living rooms in America, especially in the gay community, and it’s right on the North Side of Chicago.

What would you do with a windfall? - TV Feature

What would you do with a windfall? - TV Feature

The lottery. We’ve all thought about winning at some point in our lives. Now the new NBC show “Windfall” finds twenty people dealing with the reality of splitting a $386 million jackpot. Nine million viewers tuned in to what could be one of the hottest shows this summer.

The most notable cast member is Luke "I hope I'm not referred to as Dylan McKay for the rest of my life" Perry. He plays Peter Schaefer who seems to have the perfect life with his wife and two kids. But she still harbors feelings for her childhood sweetheart.

There is talk of murder, tons of possible love interests and of course spending the millions. But that's not real life.

Top 7 Series Finales - Feature

Top 7 Series Finales - Feature
Best. Finales. Ever.

Every show must come to an end (besides "The Simpsons").This time around "West Wing," "That 70's Show," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Will & Grace" and "Alias" aired their final episodes. I know what you're thinking: "Malcolm" is still on the air?" Apparently so.

Six Feet Under ... as sad as you want it to be.When talking about series finales, inevitably (older) people bring up "Newhart," "MASH" or something else that was on 30 years ago. And of course the series finale is a difficult beast to tame.

Top 7 animated films - feature

Top 7 animated films - feature
"Over the Hedge" begins the animated fight for box-office supremacy this weekend. It stars Bruce Willis as a raccoon trying to help his friends recapture their land. More importantly, it is from the creators of "Shrek." In fact, the other two animated flicks this summer can be introduced the same way. "Cars" (due June 9) is from Disney/Pixar and "Monster House" (due July 21) is from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, and the graphics look like "Polar Express."

All of these movies have the pedigree to enter the best of the best. And sure, Pixar's films could make up the whole list. There won't be any hybrids either, which means no "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" or "Space Jam." So, with that in mind, here are my Top 7 animated films of all-time.

Chicago Sally has 'Survived' reality TV - Interview

Chicago Sally has 'Survived' reality TV - Interview
Sally Schumann, 27, was a recent cast-off from the TV show "Survivor." But as she likes to say, she's the second member of the jury. The former soccer coach and now Chicago resident and server at a downtown tavern, sat down to talk about the show, the weight loss, her boyfriend's Speedo and unfortunately why she isn't the final one to outwit, outlast, outplay.

Reality Fight Night - TV Feature

Reality Fight Night - TV Feature
In one corner we had Dancing with the Stars. ABC's show was in the semi-finals with Jerry Rice, Stacy Keibler and Drew Lachey being the stars attempting to make it into the finals. Over on CBS was another installment of Survivor (now in its twelfth season). The current big boy on the block has been Fox's American Idol and it was the first elimination round of the season.
